Approximately 11,237 Ohio soldiers died from wounds received on the various battlefields, while another 13,354 men perished from diseases. Eighty-four of every one thousand Ohio men who served died in the war. Another forty-four for every one thousand deserted. This was one of the lowest desertion rates in the Union states. The prison closed in September 1865. No remains, except preserved graveyard. The island, now primarily a private residential community, can be reached by a toll causeway (since 1972). The capital region was critical in the development of the war, not only as home to the federal government but also because of its close proximity to the borders of the north and south. Well, after several months of trying to reach folks who might be interested in forming a friends/preservation group for the battles at Cynthiana, we held our first meeting of the Cynthiana Battlefields Foundation this past Saturday at Biancke's Restaurant, and over a dozen folks turned out, including several locals.
